Overview

The trip

Two artists, two paths into modern art. Van Gogh painted what he felt; Picasso changed how we see.

In the Netherlands, students study the largest Van Gogh collection in the world at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. In Belgium, the Magritte Museum in Brussels shows how Surrealism asked what a painting could mean. In France, they see Van Gogh and the Impressionists at the Musée d'Orsay, visit Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent his last weeks and is buried, and trace Picasso at the Musée Picasso in Paris. In Spain, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona shows how a young painter learned his craft, and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid holds Guernica, Picasso's 1937 response to the bombing of a Basque town.
