Overview
The trip
The Alps rose when the African and European plates collided, and glaciers then carved them into the landscape students see today.
At Jungfraujoch, 3,454 metres up, students read the evidence of glacier retreat from the Aletsch Glacier region. At Lucerne's Glacier Garden, potholes carved by meltwater show the ice age in the ground. In the Lauterbrunnen valley, a U-shaped valley and its waterfalls show glacial erosion. In Zermatt, the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat railway show a pyramid-shaped peak and a glacier up close.
