Overview

The trip

Four cities, four centuries of architecture: this trip traces India's built history from Mughal masterworks to the only city Le Corbusier ever built in full.

In Delhi, students study Humayun's Tomb, a 16th-century garden-tomb that set the template for Mughal architecture, alongside the Jama Masjid and Red Fort, and walk through Lutyens' Delhi, the colonial-era city plan still shaping how the capital is governed today.

In Chandigarh, students enter Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex, the only city he designed and built in full, a complete realisation of his modernist urban philosophy, and see Nek Chand's Rock Garden, a counterpoint built from the city's own construction waste.

Agra brings the Mughal story to its height at the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's short-lived capital, before the trip closes in Jaipur, India's 18th-century planned city, where Charles Correa's Jawahar Kala Kendra reinterprets a traditional mandala plan for a modern cultural centre.
