Overview

The trip

Japan holds tradition and modernity side by side, and teaches its young people to remember the past.

In Tokyo, students visit Meiji Shrine and Senso-ji Temple. In Kyoto, Nijo Castle, built as the Tokugawa shoguns' residence, and Fushimi Inari Shrine show how centuries of governance and spirituality remain visible in the city. The trip closes in Hiroshima at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, where students learn from the city's own account of 1945 and its message of peace. All three cities lie along the Shinkansen line.
