Overview
For over a thousand years the Silk Road carried goods, ideas and faiths between East and West, and Uzbekistan's ancient cities were its crossroads.
Students travel from Tashkent to Samarkand on the Afrosiyob high-speed train. In Samarkand, they stand in Registan Square, framed by three madrasas, visit Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of Timur, and the Ulugh Beg Observatory, built by a ruler who was also an astronomer, and see silk paper made by hand in the traditional way. In Bukhara, a medieval trading city with a UNESCO-listed old town, they walk the Lyab-i Hauz plaza and the old trading domes.
The trip then flies to Astana, Kazakhstan, a capital developed on a large scale since it became the capital in 1997. Students study how a modern capital is designed.
