Overview

The trip

This trip traces law and diplomacy through four countries, from a university law faculty's own classrooms to the institutions where international law and diplomacy are practised every day.

In Munich, students spend a day at Ludwig Maximilian University, one of Europe's oldest and most respected universities, in a session with its Faculty of Law, before visiting the European Patent Office, where a single legal framework governs intellectual property protection across dozens of countries.

In Luxembourg, the focus shifts to European Union law at the Court of Justice of the European Union, where students examine how one court's rulings bind 27 member states, alongside the smaller EFTA Court.

In Strasbourg, students visit the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe, the institutions most directly responsible for defending human rights across the continent, and, where parliamentary sessions align with the visit, the European Parliament's Strasbourg seat.

The trip closes in Geneva, at the United Nations Office at Geneva, alongside the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Trade Organization, where students see diplomacy and humanitarian law in practice, in the city most associated with international negotiation itself.
