Overview

The trip

Nairobi hosts the UN's headquarters in Africa, one of its four main headquarters locations alongside New York, Geneva and Vienna.

On day one, students take the official guided tour of the UN complex at Gigiri, home to the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat, and learn how treaties, resolutions and diplomatic status work. On day two, they turn to Kenya's own institutions, to see how the 2010 Constitution separates power and how national law and international law meet. On day three, a Model UN workshop has students represent countries, negotiate and draft a resolution.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe how UN agencies such as UNEP use international law to protect the environment
  • Explain how Kenya's 2010 Constitution separates power between Parliament, the executive and the courts
