Overview

The trip

Mount Kenya and the Aberdares are two of Kenya's five water towers: mountain forests that catch rain and mist and feed the rivers supplying millions of people and the country's power stations, including much of Nairobi's water.

Students hike the lower slopes and moorland of Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see how vegetation zones change with altitude and what the shrinking glaciers say about a changing climate. In the Aberdares, they see the electric fence built around the range by the Rhino Ark charity to reduce conflict between wildlife and farmers and protect the forest.
