Overview

The trip

South African music carries the country's history.

In Johannesburg, students visit Soweto to learn how music carried community and protest through the apartheid years, and the Market Theatre. In Cape Town, they trace Cape jazz and the Cape Malay choir and minstrel traditions, and spend a session at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town. Departure can be timed around the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
