Overview

The trip

Two countries, two answers to one question: how does a nation build its future without abandoning its past?

In Seoul, students visit Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Zaha Hadid's building of double-curved panels with no straight line, and the Ewha Womans University campus, which Dominique Perrault set into the ground. In Kyoto, Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji's rock garden and traditional machiya townhouses show the timber, proportion and material logic Japanese architects still study. In Tokyo, students see how Kengo Kuma, SANAA and Tadao Ando bring that discipline to contemporary buildings.
