Overview

The trip

Egypt's civilisation lasted about three thousand years, and archaeologists are still reading it.

In Cairo, students stand before the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, visit Saqqara's Step Pyramid, the first large stone building, and explore the Grand Egyptian Museum. In Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple and Hatshepsut's temple show how kings were buried and gods worshipped. In Aswan, Philae Temple and Abu Simbel show how ancient monuments were moved in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters behind the Aswan High Dam, one of archaeology's great rescue operations.
