Overview

The trip

The Silk Road was not one road but a web of routes, and some of its oldest cities lie in Uzbekistan.

In Samarkand, students walk the mounds of Afrasiyab, the ancient city destroyed by the Mongols in 1220, see its 7th-century Sogdian wall paintings in the site museum, and visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory, whose underground remains were found by archaeologists in 1908. In Bukhara, the Ark fortress and old town show more than two thousand years of settlement. In Khiva, the walled inner city of Itchan Kala shows how oasis kingdoms defended trade routes.
